Staying comfortable during summer travel

Summer travel can be fantastic, but long hours of driving can also take a toll on your body. Ensuring proper driving ergonomics is key to a comfortable and safe journey.

Take regular breaks. Every two hours, stop to stretch and walk around. This boosts circulation and prevents stiffness, and can be especially helpful for stressful driving. You can also boost your comfort by staying hydrated and choosing comfortable, breathable clothing.

How to Adjust the Driver's Seat - full instructions from CCOHS here

  1. Seat height - raise the seat as high as you can but still be comfortable. This height will optimize your vision through the windows. You should be able to see at least 3 inches over the steering wheel.
  2. Seat forward/back position - move the seat forward until you can easily push the pedals through their full range with your whole foot, not just your toes.
  3. Seat cushion angle - adjust until your thighs are supported along the full length of the cushion without pressure at the back of your knees.
  4. Seat back rest - adjust the back rest until it supports you when you are sitting upright.
  5. Lumbar support - adjust the lumbar support to feel an even pressure along your back from the hips to shoulder height.
  6. Steering wheel - adjust the steering wheel for height or tilt and pull it back for easy reach.
  7. Head rest - while sitting, raise the head rest until the top of it is level with top of your head.

Sitting in a car is different than sitting in a chair, especially if you are the one driving. By following these ergonomic tips, you can have a more enjoyable summer drive. Safe travels!
