Mud Season Hiking

Hiking is a great activity for the body and mind. Not only are you getting physical activity, being out in nature can also boost your mood!

Now that we've experienced hints of spring, many of us are looking forward to getting back on all the beautiful hiking trails Vermont has to offer. Unfortunately during mud season, walking on the trails can cause damage. Vermont State Parks has some great suggestions on where to hike during mud season - from Mount Philo State Park Road to the Robert Frost Interpretive Trail and the Cross Vermont Trail, there's something for everyone!

Before you head out on your next hike, make sure you are prepared by packing the following hiking essentials.

  1. Appropriate footwear: For shorter hikes, trail shoes are great! For longer hikes, hiking boots provide more support.
  2. Map and Compass/GPS: Make sure you know where you're going and how far you have to go!
  3. Water: Hiking is a great workout - make sure you're properly re-hydrating. For long hikes, consider bringing a method for water purification.
  4. Healthy Snacks: Properly refueling and getting the nutrients you need to keep your energy up is important when you're out on the trails!
  5. Rain Gear/Extra Clothing: Depending on where you're hiking, the weather and temperature can change drastically from one mile to the next.
  6. Safety Items: Items such as a flashlight in case you're out later than planned and a whistle (more effective than yelling) in case you get lost are important additions to your hiking pack.
  7. First Aid Kit: Accidents can happen and it's important to be prepared by packing a first aid kit to take along with you. Signing up for a First Aid Class or Wilderness First Aid Course is also a great idea!
  8. Knife or Multi-purpose Tool
  9. Sunscreen and Sunglasses
  10. Daypack/Backpack

Pick a trail, pack a backpack, and you will be all set to lace up your hiking boots this weekend!
