Bike Safety

As the weather continues to warms up, you may be thinking it's time to dust off your bike! Whether you're planning to cycle into work or go for a weekend ride with the family, cycling provides a fun way to add more movement in your day. Before you head out, it's important to review these helpful tips to keep you safe on your next biking adventure.

  1. Get your bike tuned up. Whether you can tune it up yourself or bring it into a shop, it's good to know the bike you're using is in good shape!
  2. Always wear a helmet.
  3. Know the rules of the road. While you don't have to pass a driver's test to ride a bike, you're sharing the same road.
  4. Be as obvious as possible. If you're turning into a specific driveway or onto a street, point at where you're going.
  5. Wear bright colors.
  6. Cyclists are required by state law to use a headlight and taillight or rear reflector when riding at night.
  7. Learn some simple bicycle hand signals:
  • Left arm extended straight out = I will be turning left soon
  • Left arm extended with a 90 degree bend pointing up = I will be turning right soon
  • Left arm extended with a 90 degree bend pointing down = I will be stopping soon
Have fun and stay safe this spring and summer. Happy cycling!

  1. "I thrive in cold, gray, rainy weather. Spring and summer are miserable for me. I have terrible allergies and absolutely hate being hot and sweaty. I get heat rashes and sun poisoning if I’m outside for too long thanks to super-sensitive skin. I’m miserable once it heats up outside and can’t wait for all of the rain fall brings with it. My husband is the same way, so we love the mountains and big cities for vacations—loathe the beach. I can’t wait to try this recipe this weekend!
