Gratitude: Seeing the Good
Gratitude means being thankful for the good things. It's important to
practice gratitude because it shifts our perspective toward the good, and helps
to counterbalance the natural human inclination toward negativity bias.
Here are some inspiring gratitude prompts, choose one that feels relevant to
you to get started:
1. What
is something good that you accomplished today? Notice the tools and
actions used to accomplish this.
2. Who
is someone you’re thankful for? Think about a family member, co-worker,
friend, or mentor who makes your life better. Get specific about why you
appreciate them.
3. Name
10 things you appreciate about yourself. Consider your strengths, your values as you look for
good things in yourself.
4. What
is something my past self did that I am grateful for today? Your past self
might have made a mighty financial decision or gotten to bed early, both are fantastic
wins!
5. What
about my environment brings me happiness or comfort? Consider your home, town
or workplace. Then think about the people in it, general micro cultural norms,
and other aspects that make it special.
6. What’s
a favorite memory you’re grateful for? Remember a fun trip, a
holiday, or a special celebration. Think about the details, and what made it so
great.
7. What
is a tiny thing you enjoy? It could be a warm shower, a good book, or
your favorite snack.
Directing our attention toward these things helps us see the positive parts
of our lives. Practicing gratitude regularly can make us feel more positive and
connected with others. If you choose to write your thoughts, they can be
wonderful to look back on when times are hard. Start today by thinking about
what you're grateful for!
