Giving Back to the Community - In Fun, Free Ways!


Many people believe the best way to give back to their community is through financial donations. Although cash donations are a way to support your favorite cause, it’s not the only way you can give. There are also ways you can support your community that don’t cost anything. 

Here are just a few examples: 

Look next door. Helping your community doesn't require trekking across town. Let neighbors know if you are available to help stacking some wood, mowing the lawn, babysitting, weeding or other tasks.  Because you know them, you will know the ways they would appreciate help.

Give your time. Volunteer at a food pantry, housing shelter, library, trail maintenance group or anywhere else that you know needs help. If you have children in school, you could also consider helping there. Often field trips, sports, or fund-raising events offer opportunities to volunteer.  These are great ways to give back and helps with staying involved in your child’s life. 

Donate it. If you have extra items like clothes, shoes, blankets, furniture, or books that you’re not using anymore, donate them to a local charity. De-clutter your living space and let your unused stuff brighten someone else's home. Win-win! 

Use your skills. Think about the skills and talents you have and how you can use them to help your community. Are you a gifted singer? Offer to sing for an upcoming fundraiser. Construction skills? Eye for design? Put it out there with a idea of the type of work you do and see if a small business could use your help.     

Donate blood. The American Red Cross is always seeking blood donors. Visit www.redcrossblood.org to learn more about blood donation and to make an appointment. 

These are just a few ways you can make an impact without having to open up your wallet. As you can see, your good intentions and ability to notice need where it exits will better the lives of others regardless of your financial situation. 

Did you know that volunteering is good for you? When you volunteer not only are you helping those in need, but research shows you could also be boosting your physical health, learning new things, and reducing stress.
