Nutritious Fun with Your Kids!


Summer is the time to take advantage of the time you can spend with your kids. With the steamy weather, the requests for cool treats is a sure thing. Here's a fun and nutritious activity for you and your kids: Make your own frozen yogurt in a bag, in less than 15 minutes!!


Frozen Yogurt in a Bag

  1. Place ingredients in a snap and seal sandwich bag; seal tightly. (Recipes to follow)
  2. Fill a quart-sized freezer bag with 2-3 cups of ice.
  3. Add 2 Tbsp of salt to the ice.
  4. Place the sealed sandwich bag inside the ice-filled freezer bag and seal.
  5. Shake vigorously for 5-8 minutes.


Tip: The bag with get very cold, so have your kids wear gloves or hold the bag with a dish towel. Be sure to shake from the top edges with the ice at the bottom; but shaking vigorously is the key - and the fun!

Each recipe will make one serving.


Berry-licious Frozen Yogurt
  • 3 oz. low-fat vanilla yogurt (Greek or regular)
  • 8 blueberries
  • 2 strawberries, stems removed
  • 1 Tbsp low or non-fat milk
  • 1/4 tsp raspberry extract
  1. Rinse the berries and pat dry. Halve the blueberries and quarter the strawberries. You can use a plastic knife for little hands to cut the fruit.
  2. Measure and place ingredients into the snap and seal sandwich bag and seal. 
  3. Gently squish the fruit so that the juices release into the yogurt and it turns pink. Continue to massage the bag gently so that all of the ingredients mix together.
  4. Follow freezing instructions above.

Tropical Island Frozen Yogurt
  • 3 oz. low-fat vanilla yogurt (Greek or regular)
  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened vanilla coconut milk
  • 1/2 mango, diced
  • 1/4 cup fresh pineapple, diced or unsweetened canned
  • 1/8 tsp coconut extract
  1. Measure and place ingredients into the snap and seal sandwich bag and seal.
  2. Gently squish the fruit so that the juices release into the yogurt and it turns a light orange. Continue to massage the bag so that all the ingredients mix together.
  3. Follow freezing instructions above.

Bananas for Chocolate Frozen Yogurt
  • 3 oz. low-fat vanilla yogurt (Greek or regular)
  • 1 to 2 tbsp all natural peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp low or non-fat milk
  • 7 thin slices of ripe banana (approximately 1/3 banana)
  • 1/2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp honey, optional
  1. Measure an place all ingredients into the snap and seal sandwich bag and seal. 
  2. Gently squish the banana into the yogurt. Continue to massage the bag so that all the ingredients mix together, which will begin to look like chocolate.
  3. Follow freezing instructions above.

  • Mocha-for-Mom and Dad (instant coffee and cocoa)
  • Cookies & Cream (any flavor of your child's favorite cookie)
  • Mint Madness (peppermint patties or mint candy cane and/or mint extract)
  • Vanilla Honey Almond (vanilla extract, honey and crushed almonds)
  • Peaches and Cream (diced fresh or unsweetened canned peaches)
