National Cholesterol Education Month

Cholesterol Management Cholesterol is a waxy, fatlike substance. It is produced by the liver and is present in dietary sources. It is a major component of cell membranes and is used to make hormones, vitamin D, and bile acids used in digestion. Optimal cholesterol management is an important part of reducing heart disease. Cholesterol is carried through the blood on lipoproteins. There are two major types of lipoproteins: High-density lipoprotein (HDL), often called “good” cholesterol Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), often called “bad” cholesterol Excess LDL cholesterol is deposited in the walls of arteries throughout the body. This can lead to ASCVD, which includes heart attack, stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), stable or unstable angina, and peripheral artery disease (PAD), including aortic aneurysm, all of atherosclerotic origin. Cholesterol Monster The “cholesterol monster” illustrations below highlights the nature of high cholesterol in a playful way. It is meant to show how p...

Stress Relief - Breathing Exercises

Image
We do it mindlessly, over and over, but with a little thought, the process of breathing can be transformative. Breath Regulation The key components of yoga include postures, meditation, relaxation, and breathing exercises. These features of yoga are not exclusive and do complement each other, but the one that transcends most profoundly is breath. Breath is often thought of as the guide in all areas of yoga. Yoga helps bring more awareness to the breath which has both physical and psychological benefits. When we are stressed, we often will hold or shorten our breathing or breathe in a short, stilted manner. Being able to continue to inhale and exhale calmly and deeply throughout life is a tremendous stress reliever.  Throughout yoga class, teachers will remind you to regulate your breath and this is one of the most transferable skills that you can very quickly take off of the mat and into your everyday life.  Breathing Exercises Below are a few breathing practices that you can ...

LiveWell Announces EPIC FACTORS!   An Online Program from Epic Wellness! NECK STRENGTH  When we think about strength, the neck is one of the last parts of the body we think about. But in reality, the majority of us will experience neck pain at some point, and "tech neck" is a rising cause. But spice is the flavor of life! So push yourself to try something outside of your routine.  This month, we're focusing on the  Neck region . So much of our bodies starts or ends with our posture in our head and neck, and can exacerbate the tension and stress we often carry here as well.  Read more about common Neck and He...

Safe and Effective Strength Training for All ages and Abilities  from Heather Main   First, the basics.   We all need three types of exercise. The specific answers to each of these depends on your personal goals.   Today we’re focusing on strength training.     Frequency – how often? Duration – for how long? Intensity – how hard do I work?   Cardiovascular exercise       Strength training         2 – 3 x/ week on non-consecutive days.   What happens if I lift just once a week? 30 – 45 minutes should be fine.   If you LOOOOOVE weight lifting you can take more time. Take it to an “8” on your subjective scale of 1-10 of how hard you’re working.   Variables: weights and repetitions Flexibility and...
