What to Bring On a Day Hike

Do you love hiking and want to make sure you're prepared on the trail? Make sure you have these essential items on your next hike.

.) Appropriate footwear. For shorter hikes, trail shoes are great, but for longer hikes or if you're carrying a heavier backpack a more supportive hiking shoe/boot will be beneficial.

.) Map/Compass. Having a map and compass with you in case you get lost and in case your GPS fails, is essential.

.) Extra water and/or a way to purify water. When you become dehydrated, your body can't perform well. Be sure to pack plenty of water.

.) Extra food. It's always a good idea to have extra food on hand in case you get lost, you want to spend a little more time by a stream you found, the terrain was more difficult than expected and you need to keep your energy up, etc.

.) Rain gear and extra clothing. The weather can be unpredictable especially if you're changing altitudes throughout your hike. Dressing in layers can help, avoiding cotton, bring a rain jacks, and have a hat on you.

.) Fire/Headlamp/Whistle. A way to start a fire is essential. If you get lost, it not only can help others find you, but also keep you warm. A whistle is more effective than yelling. Additionally, if you're out later than expected, then having a flashlight or headlamp can help you find your way.

.) First Aid Kit. Accidents can happen. Be prepared whether it's a little cut or a more serious injury, having items on hand will be of great use to you. Additionally taking a wilderness first aid course can be very beneficial if you spend a lot of times outdoors.

.) Knife or Multipurpose tool. These can help you do a variety of tasks to fixing broken eyeglasses to repairing gear.

.) Sunscreen and sunglasses. Even in winter, at higher altitudes the combination of sun and snow can burn your skin and hurt your eyes. Make sure you have sunglasses and sunscreen with you.

.) Daypack/Backpack. You need something to carry all your supplies in! Try to find something sturdy and water resistant/water proof.
