Cravings? Use These Tips to Stay in Control!

Eat Breakfast. Think of food as your fuel. Without putting fuel in your tank, you're energy levels are going to wane pretty quickly. Eating breakfast is a healthy and smart way to start your day. It's gets your metabolism going and sets you up for success later in your day because you're less likely to overeat later on.

Snack Smart. Enjoying healthy snacks regularly can keep your blood sugar levels stable and your hunger levels in check. Shoot for every three hours or so for optimal energy and be sure to include a food that has a bit of protein such as Greek yogurt, a handful of unsalted nuts or a hard boiled egg. This will keep you staying full longer, and will keep your blood sugar levels more stable.

Treat Yourself. Enjoying small treats in moderation, rather than denying yourself completely, can stave off overindulging later. Depriving yourself of your favorite treats is like telling a child not to do something. You've probably experienced this - the more you deny yourself, the more you want it. Be realistic and allow yourself a small amount of your favorite treat and savor every bite!

Hydrate. Thirst can sometimes be mistaken for hunger. Drink water all day, especially when you feel a craving coming on...it could be dehydration!

Get Moving. Nip cravings in the bud - your mood will be boosted from the feel-good endorphins released during exercise. People also report that exercise tends to minimize cravings for unhealthy foods - perhaps because of the time and hard work you put into it.

Freshen Up. Chewing gum or brushing your teeth can sometimes "re-set" your mouth so a snack all of a sudden doesn't sound so good. That bowl of coffee ice cream also doesn't taste quite the same after having a mouth full of toothpaste :)

Redirect. Sometimes taking your mind off a craving can stop it in its tracks. Call a friend, go for a walk or do some scrapbooking. Give it a little time and the craving will likely pass!

Out of Sight, Out of Mind. Steer clear of the office kitchen if you know Bob's birthday cake is still there. Sometimes just the thought of a particular temptation will cause you to crave it, even if you're not hungry. Avoid storing food on countertops at home - especially if it's the foods you typically crave such as chips, cookies or other snack items. Instead, leave fresh fruits on the counter...you'll be more likely to eat them!
