Minimizing

Minimizing your life can be liberating. Cleaning out, reducing clutter and letting go can be a very positive experience, if done in a healthy way. Below are some tips to help you minimalize without becoming stressed.

  • Have a plan. Create a list of the areas you would like to declutter. Order this list by importance. Starting with the easier areas or rooms can help you gain motivation to move onto other areas.
  • Choose from the list. Find a starting room or starting point and focus on it. Jumping from space to space with no real reason can cause you to lose focus and end up making more of a mess.
  •  Set realistic goals. An entire room does not have to be completed in a single day. Some days a single drawer in the bathroom might be it, and that is ok! Celebrate your accomplishments. If you are feeling overwhelmed by a certain area try setting a period of time that you will work on it and remember to be happy with whatever you achieve.
  • Remember less can be more. Do not trash items that you use, but when you are removing clutter from an area think about how often, if at all, you use it. Chances are if you have not used it in the past year, you do not really need it.

When you are sorting through the items in your space that you no longer have use for, consider donating them to a charitable organization or to someone less fortunate than yourself.
